iPhones No Longer Supported

Planned software obsolescence is the acceleration of a device's aging by updating its operating system. It's ugly, and at Back Market, it's our mission to fight against it, one renewed device at a time.

The following iPhone models have reached the end of software support and cannot be upgraded beyond the listed maximum operating system:

Recently Discontinued Support (max iOS 15–18)

  • iPhone XR, XS, XS Max - Maximum OS: iOS 18.6
  • iPhone X, 8, 8 Plus - Maximum OS: iOS 16.5
  • iPhone 7, 7 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, SE (1st gen) - Maximum OS: iOS 15.5

Limited Functionality (Maximum iOS 12.5.7)

  • iPhone 6 Plus - Maximum OS: iOS 12.5.7
  • iPhone 6 - Maximum OS: iOS 12.5.7
  • iPhone 5s - Maximum OS: iOS 12.5.7

VoLTE note: Apple states VoLTE is available only on iPhone 6 or later. Many carriers now require VoLTE-capable devices for activation, which effectively excludes iPhone 5s and older (and some carriers may also refuse to activate iPhone 6-era hardware).

Very Limited Functionality:

These devices do not support recent enough operating systems to allow for the majority of applications to be downloaded or function. They will work with the applications that come pre-installed (Safari, calculator, calendar, etc.) but you will not be able to download new apps from the App Store.

  • iPhone 5 - Maximum OS: iOS 10.3.4
  • iPhone 5c - Maximum OS: iOS 10.3.3
  • iPhone 4s - Maximum OS: iOS 9.3.5
  • iPhone 4 - Maximum OS: iOS 7.1.2

Which Apps Will Work on My iPhone?

Many popular apps require recent operating systems. If your iPhone runs iOS 10 or older, you can only use pre-installed apps like Safari, Calendar, and Notes — you cannot download new apps from the App Store.

If your iPhone is maxed out at iOS 12 or lower, most modern apps will no longer work, and the App Store may be severely limited.

If your iPhone runs iOS 13-18: Some apps will work, but many popular apps require newer versions. Here are the requirements for some commonly used apps:

Social Media:

  • Instagram - Requires iOS 15.1 or later.
  • WhatsApp - Requires iOS 15.1 or later.

Business:

  • Zoom - Requires iOS 15 or later.
  • Slack - Requires iOS 16 or later.
  • Microsoft Teams - Requires iOS 17 or later.
  • Microsoft Outlook - Requires iOS 18 or later.

Entertainment:

  • YouTube - Requires iOS 16 or later.
  • Netflix - Requires iOS 18 or later.
