Why is my device locked?Updated 14 days ago

If your device is locked, don’t worry — here’s what it means and how to fix it.

Sometimes a device may appear locked due to one of the following:

  • Activation Lock

  • iCloud Account Lock

  • MDM (Mobile Device Management) or Firmware Lock

We’ll walk you through each one.

Activation Lock

Apple’s Activation Lock is designed to keep your device secure if it’s ever lost or stolen.
If the device was marked as lost before, or if it’s being accessed using a different Apple ID, you may see an activation lock when you turn it on.

How to remove an Activation Lock

  1. Go to the iCloud website.

  2. Log in using your Apple ID and password.

  3. Select Find My.

  4. Tap All Devices and choose the device you want to remove.

  5. Select Remove from Account.

This will disconnect the device from your iCloud.
If you don’t remember the Apple ID used, the device cannot be accessed until the correct one is provided.

Forgot your Apple ID password?

Resetting your password is the first step:

  1. Visit Apple’s Forgot Password page.

  2. Enter the phone number linked to your Apple ID.

  3. When prompted, tap Allow.

  4. Enter your device passcode.

  5. Create a new password and confirm it.

  6. Tap Continue.

Then repeat the Activation Lock removal steps above.

If you’re still unable to reset your password, please contact Apple Support for further assistance.

iCloud Account Lock

If certain features like FaceTime or Apple Music ask for Apple ID credentials—and the details entered are incorrect—you may see a “verification failed” message.
In this case, the device is iCloud-locked, but still usable except for certain services.

Resetting your password

  1. Visit Apple’s Forgot Password page.

  2. Enter the phone number linked to your Apple ID.

  3. Select Allow.

  4. Enter your device passcode.

  5. Create and confirm a new password.

  6. Tap Continue.

Once done, you’ll be able to access all previously locked features.

Resetting your password using another device

  1. On a different Apple device, download the Apple Support app.

  2. Scroll to Support Tools.

  3. Select Reset PasswordHelp Someone Else.

  4. Enter the email or phone number linked to your Apple ID.

  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish.

Using Apple’s Account Recovery

If you don’t have the required information to reset your password, Apple’s account recovery process can help you regain access. You can start this through Apple Support.
